A December Retreat at The Newt in Somerset
There’s something about Somerset in December that feels like stepping into another world.
The Newt, a place that seems to encapsulate everything I love about the English countryside—elegance, charm, and a deep connection to nature insane food and the best hotel baths.
Arriving at The Newt with the boys, we were greeted by that perfect mix of warmth and luxury.
The estate, wrapped in its winter coat of bare branches and deer fulled fields, has an air of serene beauty, with the gardens resting before their spring awakening.
Our room's were a haven, the kind of space that makes you feel instantly at ease.
We were in the main house with large sash windows framing the view of the countrys, and inside, the blend of natural textures—wood, wool, and leather— A lot of sage.
The boys were immediately excited by the thought of exploring the grounds teh golf cart and meeting Father Christmas, while I couldn’t wait to relax by the fire with a cup of tea.
Mornings at The Newt began with 'dippy eggs' The gardens, even in winter, were a marvel. The boys loved the adventure of wandering through the apple orchards, though the real highlight was of course Father Christmas.
There’s something wonderful about experiencing a place like The Newt through the eyes of children the Roman House recreated with such care . The Waven cave also a favourite for the boys.
As evening fell, the hotel took on a new kind of magic. The warm glow from the windows, the flickering of candlelight, and the crackling of the fire in the drawing room.
